Sommer Contemporary Art congratulates Yael Bartana upon her new solo exhibition – Redemption Now, which will open on June 4, 2021, at the Jewish Museum Berlin. The first comprehensive retrospective of the artist Yael Bartana examines the redeeming potential of art and our imagination. For over twenty years, Bartana has explored the great historical narratives that help shape national and other collective identities.
The exhibition brings together over 50 early and more recent works, including video works, photographs, and light sculptures. The centerpiece of the exhibition is the commissioned work Malka Germania (Hebrew for “Queen Germania”), which Bartana specially created for the Jewish Museum Berlin and filmed in Berlin at historical locations. The arrival of an androgynous figure of salvation in the German capital evokes scenes from an imagined common unconscious: past and future coincide in an alternative present. With the theme of collective redemption, the video installation also addresses trauma, expectations of salvation, and the longing for change.
