Half Turn takes shape within Sommer Salon as a series of interventions into the architecture of this intimate setting. Responding specifically to the space, Hilla Toony Navok displaces familiar domestic elements from their expected contexts: curtains are trapped behind locked panels, shutters become freestanding structures carrying everyday objects, and patterned textile samples are brought together like fragments of a floor plan. Through these subtle shifts in order and function, the familiar becomes strange, revealing the emotional associations embedded in the domestic environment.

Windows, doors, shutters and locks have long appeared in Navok’s work as structures that regulate movement: they allow passage while also holding something back, connecting inside and outside while maintaining the possibility of separation. They also evoke the architectural language of postwar modernism and the International Style that profoundly shaped the urban landscape of Israel. Windows, shutters and balconies mediate between private interiors and the city outside, regulating light, air, visibility and exposure. In Half Turn, Navok unsettles this relationship. Elements designed to negotiate the boundary between inside and outside are brought into the interior and occupy its open space, while the contents and structures of the domestic interior appear to spill outward. Inside and outside, intimate and public, enclosure and exposure begin to exchange places.

The title Half Turn captures precisely this suspended movement – the partial turn of a key, the beginning of an opening or a closing, without determining in which direction it will continue. Across the exhibition, this unresolved gesture becomes both physical and emotional: an invitation to open that retains the possibility of closure, moving between retreat and approach, containment and passage.
